Adam applies the law of reverse effect, aiming to create a vision that is undesirable to empower the part that wants to live to become more influential. Adam also creates a suggestion that by enjoying smoking it boosts the immune system so in order to get cancer quicker he has to no longer enjoy smoking - this could then reduce the amount of smoking to decrease the chance of getting cancer quicker.
